St. George and the Dragon
1992
colored pencil
approx. 22" by 10"
This was a study for a giant painting I was eventually going to do. I was thinking about the story of Saint George and the dragon, and how in most paintings St. George is spearing a wimpy looking dragon from atop his huge horse. In this drawing I was thinking about the dragon as a symbol of a huge malicious force like alchoholism, that is part of St. George (notice the dragon motif on his armor). St. George tries to be brave but in fact cannot face the onslaught of the dragon, and it is only through the help of an angel that he manages to overcome, not through his own valiancy and huge horse. The landscape is also an echo of the struggle between good and evil.
