Web Design

Most of these are links to live web sites. As time goes on and link rot sets in, some of them will go bad. If you find a bad one, please email me.

The Third Sector Technologies Era

Third Sector Technologies does all manner of technological work, mostly for nonprofit organizations in Alaska. I mostly work on programming projects for them, but here is some of the web design I have done:

thethirdsector.com redesign
Summer 2001
This redesign is not yet (as of July 17, 2001) live, but it will be in the next few weeks.
City of Fairbanks redesign
Summer 2001
This one is still (as of July 17, 2001) in the initial design process.
akstartup.org
Summer 2001
A Slash-based site for the program Third Sector is conducting to encourage entrepeneurship in rural Alaska. It's closely connected with akbiz.org, which Jana Peirce did the design for.
meditrack.thethirdsector.com
Summer 2000
A Slash-based user support forum for one of Third Sector's software products
workforce.thethirdsector.com
Fall 2000
I designed the graphics for this site, which aggregates survey data projecting the number of job openings in the oil industry.
Weather Underground "weather sticker" graphics
Summer 2000
I designed these graphics for Weather Underground's "sticker" feature.

The Internet Alaska Era

Internet Alaska was one of the largest and oldest ISPs in Alaska, and I worked for them from fall 1997 to spring 2000. We started out doing sites for clients but decided eventually to focus on bigger projects. During this time I gradually shifted away from graphic design toward programming. Here's a survey of some of the design oriented work, and the programming work is in the programming section of my portfolio.

Internet Alaska front page - June 1998
I designed and implemented this hand-coded edition of the Internet Alaska front page, and it's still one of my favorite designs.
UPBC youth group
April 1998
This site was a labor of love for the youth group at my church in Fairbanks.
Web Services redesign
April 1998
This redesign of our departmental site includes swanky gesticulating stick figures and a unique application of frames. It was never implemented.

The PolarNet Era

PolarNet was a small ISP in Fairbanks, Alaska, that I worked for in 1996 and 1997, before it was acquired by PTIAlaska. I designed a lot of sites there:

Usibelli Coal Mine
I started this site while working at PolarNet and continued it up as my own company, Renaissance Graphics. It never quite got finished, though. Note the flexible, full-page layout that stretches to fit different sized browsers.
1997-1998
1997 Tanana Valley State Fair
A fun project. I also designed graphics and modified source code for the Cabbage Invasion java applet.
Wolf Creek Outfitters
April, 1997
This is one of my favorite sites. I like the graphical presentation, the amount of information available, and the interface.
www3.polarnet.com-- About PolarNet
Summer 1997
This is a prototype for a new PolarNet web site, never completed.
All Seasons Inn
August, 1997
PolarNet
ongoing May 1996 - September 1997
PolarNet Time Card Program
June 1997
This is a disabled version of the Time Card program. I was responsible for the design, layout, and JavaScript of the interface page. Dustin Andrews did most of the work on the CGI. You can play with the interface here, but you can't submit anything. The full version retained your daily hours throughout the week if you used the save button, and emailed your timecard to you if you clicked the mail button.
Fairbanks Convention & Visitors Bureau
February, 1997
This site also had Japanese and German versions.
Northern Schools Federal Credit Union
April, 1997
1997 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race
December 1996 - February 1997
Fairbanks Counseling & Adoption
July 1997
Yukon Quest Trading Company Online Store
Early e-commerce experience.
February 1997
Alaska Fish & Trails Unlimited
October 1996
Gold King Creek Lodge
December 1996
Street, Guinn, Real Estate Appraisers
March 1997
I designed the logo along with the (very small) web page.
Greatland Sausage
March 1997

The OrbWeavers Era

In my last year of college (1995-1996), my roommates and I started a web design business called OrbWeavers. It was fun, and we didn't get paid much for all the time we sunk into it, but it opened the door of a career for me...

Unfortunately, I don't think any of the sites we designed back then have survived. Oh well, the web goes on...
