ALIEN SHOOT OUT:
Four boys and one girl participated in the Alien Shoot Out. A sizeable
adult crowd enjoyed watching the heated battle almost as much as the children
enjoyed engaging in it. The Tanana Valley State Fair has plans for an enen
bigger and better shoot out next year.
August 2, 1997
BABY SHOW:
The musical refrain, "Oh You Beautiful Doll," applied to over
200 tiny contestants who cometed in the Baby Show at the Tanana Valley
State Fair on Saturday, August 2nd. This lively event ran smoothly, thanks
to KWLF's disc jockeys, Glenner and Rocky, plus a great group of volunteers.
Zachary Henry (Climber Category; 13-18 mos.) received the title of Harvest
Prince. Tristian Vorhies (Infant category: 5-8 mos.) was crowned Harvest
Princess.
CABAGE THROW CONTEST:
Fifteen contestants joined in the final round of fun to make the Cabbage
Leaf Throw contest a great success. Before an enthusiastic audience, Thomas
Iles took first place. The Grand Prize was awarded to Miles West. The winning
throw went all the way from Totem Square to the flower pot to win a copy
of the fair's cabbage cookbook.
August 3, 1997
SAUERKRAUT SCROUNGE:
Twelve people participated in this year's scavanger hunt. Craig Landes
was the grand prize winner because he discovered the brussel sprout in
the bucket of sauerkraut. He received a UAF t-shirt along with the items
collected during the hunt. The event ended with a bang when we discovered
that someone actually stole the bucket of sauerkraut!
August 4, 1997
CABBAGE DASH:
The cabbages have landed and 19 fairgoers participated in the Cabbage Dash
contest to pick up the cabbages and take them to the grocery store. Kody
Borman was the 1st place winner for the 6 & under category, Amy Port
took 1st place for 7-10 year olds, and Doug LaValley caputeured first place
for ages 11-14.
HERE SUEY, SUEY!!:
Ten contestants competed in the hog call. Our grand prize of a ham went
to our returning champion, Glen Clark, who came up from Nenana for the
competition. Wow! What a call!! Ya'll should've seen the live pig we had
on hand come a runnin!!!
GREAT SUCCESS FOR THE FOOD BANK:
Food Bank Day was a tremendous success despite this year's new Monday date
and all day tome frame to get into the fair free with 2 cans of food. We
had over 400 boxes of food by 5:00pm compared to 385 boxes last year. Thank-you
Fairbanks for another successful Food Bank Donation Day!!!
TALENT SHOW:
We had a full hous in the Coliseum Tent for the first of two rounds of
the Talent Show competition.

KIDS DAY:
Tuesday was Kids Day. This was the day where children 12 and under could get into the fair with just a book donation. This event was sponsored by ARCO and all 1588 books donated went to teh Fairbanks Literacy Council. The Fairbanks Education Association held kid's activities for over 350 kids in teh Coliseum Tent from noon till 5:00pm.
TOY QUEST COIN SCRAMBLE:
The fair held two Toy Quest Coin Scramble competitions on Kids Day. Both events has two heats: ages 3-6 and 7-11. All together we had 48 contestants. Chris Port, Kody Wardlaw, Karren Wardina & Nolan Johansen walked away with prizes because they discovered the gold wodden coins.
DOLL SHOW:
This year's Doll Show had 20 categories. One in particular was the special Fair Theme in whihc Laura Bowine won first place for bringing in a "Kiler Cabbage" doll. Kelly Hansen won the doll drawing and walked away with a beautiful porcelain doll donated by Xanadu Gifts.
ALIEN SHOOT OUT:
The second Alien Shoot out proved that this is a fun event! WE had 24 contestants and our grand prize winner of a Super Soaker was so excited he ran off to the midway before we could get his name!
August 6, 1997
SENIOR LUNCHEON:
Despite Wednesday's rain, the Senior Luncheon was still a success!! Over 1,500 senior citizens enjoyed a turkey dinner donated by Fed Meyer and prepared by the Midnight Sun Chefs Association. Our community seniors were entertained by "Croonin." Sister Marita Soucy, Lois Bruhn, Bill E. Bishop, Dick Sullivan, Miriam Stowell and Lucille Grosacker were our door prize winners.
August 7, 1997
OVEREASY OR SCRAMBLED?:
The fair had two exciting contests designed for this Thursday's Nissan Buddy Day - the Overesay or Scrambled? egg toss and the Buddy Triathalon. We had 5 teams tossing eggs to their buddies, but Max and Dominic Manning took first place when they walked away yolk free. The Buddy Triathalon had two teams - boys against girls. This event was neck and neck, but Kayla and Trisha Johnson were able to steal first place without a photo finish.
BOOTH THEME CONTEST RESULTS:
Best Appearance (in conjunction with theme): Thermax
Best Overall Use of Theme: Fairbanks Daily News Miner
Most Creative Use of Theme: Fairbanks Community Food Bank
Best Use of Fair Colors: Seventh Day Adventists
Best Use of Cabbages: Etekeok Designs
August 8, 1997
GOT MILK?:
Seventeen contestants, ages 4 to 37, competed in the Got Milk? contest. Some contestants tried to cram down the peanut butter sandwich, but our winner, Dan Johnson, knew the trick was to eat slow in order to win first.
GETTING 'SLAWED:
The Totem Square crowd got quite a laugh Friday evening when they witnessed eight fairgoers eat coleslw without any hands. An apparently underfed Dan Johnson once again showed the fair his eating techniques and won the grand prize, which was an "I got slawed at the Tanana Valley Fair: t-shirt.
August 9, 1997
PIE AND CUPCAKE EATING CONTEST:
The Pie/Cupcake Eating Contest had three divisions: 48 years, 9-16 years, and 16 and over. Ryan Simpson was the first of nine contestants to eat a cupcake in the 4-8 year division. A two time Palmer Fair pie eating champ, Jamie Allen, won our 9-16 year division. Jamie obviously knows how to eat a pie! While all other contestants ate hostess pies, Jamie requested to compete with a big piece of pie from a real apple pie. Our winner from the Got Milk? contest lost to a new comer, Randy Baade.
HOW FAR CAN YOU SHOOT THE BULL?:
Wow, what an event! This was the first time a Cow Chip Throw has taken place at the Tanana Valley State Fair, and what a success it was! Fairgoers stood by and watched 33 contestants throw cow pies down the walk way in front of the Borealis Pavilion. THe grand prize of 26 lbs. of ground beef went to Matt, the jugler from Throw Up: A Comedy Adventure.
